Sustainable ideas

I am dedicating this page to ideas to save energy and to become more sustainable.

I believe our main concern should begin with conservation. The less we use... and the more we re-use or recycle the more we can learn to have abundances of what is needed for our futures and the futures of generations to come.

We live roughly 30 miles from the nearest big shopping area and major services so trips to the city are usually planned two-weeks in advance and we take care of numerous tasks in one trip.

One thing that I really dig is the "free" posts on craigslist! It is a great place to find things some consider useless, that others like me can save from helping to fill a local landfill! I will scour the three closest cities and try to schedule at least three items if I have indeed found something I can use. Some of the cool stuff I have scored are a free hot tub that I plan to use for raising fish, 300-sheets of 1/2"x4'x8' Styrofoam that I used for insulating the floor, walls, and ceiling of our 300 sq. ft. addition on our home, two awesome solid wood desks... one of them a roll-top and the other with a big credenza, and awesome china cabinet, thousands of used bricks that I will use for walkways through a garden I plan to make as well as a barbeque... the list goes on and on!

Currently I am trying to round-up at least five big screen projection TV's that are pretty abundant on craigslist mainly because they are expensive to fix. I have heard people say it can cost from $150-$350 for a service to pick them up and dispose of them! I plan to use the screens for concentrators to use the sun's energy to heat and hopefully also provide power from a steam powered generator. These are all dreams at this point but seem perfectly obtainable with some good ol' Hickerbilly ingenuity a big plus is having plenty of experience with steam lines from when I worked as a pipe-fitter at numerous refineries. I saw a cool video on Youtube that showed how you could actually melt a brick using a projection screen focusing the sun on it... totally incredible!
